Now that I have prepared a preliminary Lines Plan for Tinker 2 the next step will be to produce a small scale, 1:10, hull model. Whilst the 3D facility in Maxsurf allows me to view the hull form from any angle, and is a real aid to Design, actually building a small scale hull model helps to reinforce confidence in the hull form. The Sail Plan is developing and again the emphasis here is on simplicity.

Following are several Images of the faired hull and a Body Plan which will give a good indication of the hull form and I believe reveal a nicely balanced hull. Also attached are my initial thoughts on the Sail plan.

One comment I have received suggested a conventional cabin rather than the Blister style I have chosen and of course this is a personal preference of mine, which I feel will give a safer working platform, but can easily be modified should an owner desire.

As always your comments and thoughts are most welcome.

As one of the crew said to my late father at the time “a beautiful sailing yacht but by hell she is wet”.

Apart from the perfect sheer line and wine glass sections of the Tumlare the balance of the bow and stern plays an important role in the aesthetics of the Design. In fact it is the stern, which many consider to be the most seaworthy of all, that captivates me most of all.

Over the years I have sketched my own version of a small ‘Pocket Cruiser’ with a similar style of stern and wine glass sections, albeit slightly fuller, than the Tumlare.

Tinker 2 is my idea of a small Pocket Cruiser, easily handled and with just the basic accommodation layout in which I have tried to capture some of the Tumlare’s features.

Rather than the small coachroof of the Tumlare I have opted for a blister deck for ease of construction. With an overall length of 6.7 mtrs and a displacement of around 3000kg the possibility of towing the boat, with a suitable vehicle, opens up the opportunity of visiting new and more distant cruising grounds.

These are my final sketches of my interpretation and over the coming months as the Design proper is developed I will add details to the site. Once the Lines Plan is complete I will make a small scale model before building a prototype. Construction will either be Strip Plank or Foam Sandwich but this will be a decision I will make over the winter months.

This Proposal was for a new Ferry for use on Ullswater, in the English Lake District, to add to and compliment the two existing original Victorian Steam Ferries still operating on Ullswater. The Specification called for an up to date vessel that would be Wheelchair friendly and compliant with the latest M.C.A. regulations and also be suitable for year round use.

There is something special about the ‘Victorian Steam Yacht Style’ be it the perfect sheer line, raking masts and funnel or Clipper bow and bowsprit. Numerous freehand sketches were prepared until I developed what I considered to be a workable sketch. Turning this sketch into a Design that could meet the Specification was a very enjoyable and rewarding challenge.

The requirement to have wheelchair access to all areas of the boat including a lift from the upper boarding deck down to the main deck was particularly demanding. Two interior layouts were offered to satisfy the accommodation requirements, one with the Engine Room aft and the other with the Engine Room forward giving direct access to the Wheelhouse. The Engine Room aft version is possibly more passenger friendly offering greater all round visibility for the passengers inside the cabin.

As with any Design one of the biggest challenges was getting the proportions right whilst still satisfying what was a fairly tight specification covering some six pages. One area affected was the length, which was increased slightly, in order to maintain the passenger split and the aesthetics of the vessel. A useful addition, certainly for winter cruises, would be a lobby or canopy at one of the forward saloon accesses to limit wind and or rain entering the saloon when passengers are going to or returning from forward. This may be a detail that could be retro fitted should it be found necessary.

Whilst originally intended for use on Ullswater in the English Lake District the Design would be equally at home elsewhere and with some imagination in the arrangement as well would make an elegant Private Yacht.
